What are some signs of an open fracture?

An open fracture, also known as a compound fracture, is characterized by a break in the bone that results in the bone protruding through the skin. This presentation can lead to severe bleeding, as the exposed bone can damage surrounding tissues and blood vessels, which is why the signs of bones sticking through the skin and severe bleeding are crucial in identifying this type of fracture.

While swelling and bruising, pain and swelling, and inability to move the limb may be symptoms associated with fractures in general, they do not specifically indicate that the fracture is open. These symptoms can occur with closed fractures as well, making them less definitive in diagnosing an open fracture.
